About The Author
Nik Giyanani has been an avid sports fan since his early childhood. Growing up playing baseball and golf, his idol has always been Jackie Robinson. Nik was always fascinated by the story of how Robinson broke the MLB color barrier, and used Robinson as an example of what happens when you put your all into something. His admiration of Robinson, and his desire to delve deeper into those who came before and followed Robinson, drove Nik to write an essay examining how African-Americans impacted the Civil Rights Movement.

Nik is going to be attending the University of Miami in the Fall of 2018. At Miami, he intends to major in Biology with hope of specializing in sports medicine. Furthermore, he hopes to continue pursuing his interest in social injustice and race relations. These combined interests led Nik to writing this examination of the impact of athletes on civil rights and the continuing efforts of minority athletes today. As author of this essay, Nik hopes to shed light on the impact athletes have owing to their national spotlight, and incite his readers to join the fight against racial discrimination.
